Roots - The Spieker Saga Continues

By Susan Spieker (Paul's)

New Spieker ancestors have been unearthed (not literally) recently. As you all know, the Spieker family originated in Germany, and like many early immigrants coming to the United States, much information about those left behind in the "old country" was lost. But now, more Spieker generations have been found, through the use of the Internet.

I have been interested in genealogy for some time now. There are many, many sites on the Internet devoted to putting genealogy researchers, professional and amateur, together to share information. It has quite revolutionized the process of family tree investigation. A very popular form of website is the forum. Think of it as a massive system of bulletin boards where you "post" a message, and then come back later

to see if anyone has replied. Most are divided by categories, such as by surname (a forum for Johnson, or one for Jones), events (Civil War, Ellis Island immigrants, etc.), or maybe location (divided by states, countries, etc.). On some of the more popular and well-used sites, you can enter in a surname that has not been created, and start a new forum.

Some time ago, I posted several messages on different "Spieker" forums on different websites. Through some back-and-forth "cyber" conversations, I have been in contact with some of the Spieker distant cousins. One such cousin is a man by the name of David Reineke. He has some rather extensive research, including copies of family bible entries and church records from Germany, which expands by 2 generations what we know already of the Spieker ancestors.
So, without further ado, here is the new, expanded family tree:

Spieker Kids
LeRoy Spieker m. Elaine Hilger
Fredrick William Spieker m. Mary Louise Friedman
Fredrick Spieker m. Theresa Dubbert
Joseph Spieker m. Elizabeth Scheader (or Schrader)
Herman Spieker m. Theresia Wenkamp (their marriage date was 1813 in Rolfzen, Germany)

Therefore, the Spieker kids (Sally, Dan, Janet, John, Paul, Doris, Lynn, Mary, Tom, Steve, Pat) now know their Great, Great, Great, Great-grandparents!!

I will keep you all up to date on further discoveries.

Our Move to Maine

By Jake Thebault-Spieker

The summer started out like any other, school got out, kids got together, etc. Us kids had known that we were going to move to Maine, but it never became real until after school got out.
